Implementing Green Options in the Workplace

If you have looked at how much energy you are using and how much you could be saving if you were to only make a few changes then you are probably willing to make the changes. In today’s tough economic times going green is not just baout saving the environment but about saving companies money. For this reason many companies are getting an energy audit and putting what the audit reveals into practice. However, the changes can be hard.

First you need to understand that not everyone will be supportive. Many pepole still think of going green as something that hippies and tree huggers go. When dealing with someone who has a negative attitude, it can really bring down the moral of the group therefore you may need to be firm with the changes that you are making. Explain why the change is needed. The best way to win people over is to make sure that you have a great argument. Show people that making the switch to green office equipment is a good investment because you will save dollars for the change.

Make sure that people follow through with change. Noone can adjust overnight so you need to make sure that you are reminding them to make the changes necessary to see a difference. It is always helpful if you post signs as helpful reminders. For example if you want to make sure that people turn off all the computer monitors at night, put a little not on their monitors.

Make a game out of the change. List all the ways that the office can work together to save energy. Then give the company an incentive to follow through. An example would be throwing the company a barbecue if the next months bills are lower than the previous months.
